Title: Manor Arms
Description: Old pics

John - May 13, 2005 01:31 PM (GMT)
Does anyone out there have or know of someone who has a copy of a picture of The Glass Barrel when it was still the Manor Arms, complete with the ''Barrel'' window. We have tried many avenues so far but with no result. We would love to borrow a pic to copy and display in the pub. With a window like that loads of photos must have been taken - Go on pester your Grandad!!

Cheers John 'n' Caz

I think my nan would have so if she were alive :( I asked my mum (who was born on Robert St.) but she doesn't have any. I'll ask again maybe my auntie & uncle have some lying around.
I've seen an old picture of the Carders Arms that used to be across the road knocking around the internet so I am sure somebody must have a piccy of the good 'ole Barrel.
Good luck :thumb I like knowing about local history so it'll be good to see some old photos, some old stories would be great too :)

Have you tried any of the local history groups at Leigh Library or Astley Hall (the old hospital).
I've got a couple of books like Pubs of Leigh and Pictoral Astley (by John & Sylvia Tongue who i think are involved in the Astley Hall group) but nothing with Tyldesley in.

Chamleys in Leigh used to be the best place for historical books but its gone now. There is also a furniture shop in Leigh (Fazakerley's?) opposite Wilkinsons which has some old pictures of Leigh for sale in the window, they may have some contacts.

Good Luck.

He wants stuff about pubs of Hindsford or Atherton :P

Big W - May 20, 2005 07:01 AM (GMT)
A minor fuckin' technicality!!!!

It's all Tyldesley to me. Like when i used to live on Stour Road and say it was Astley.

John - May 24, 2005 07:38 AM (GMT)
Cheers Dub, I've already tried the archive at Leigh. Also Atherton Photographic & Historical societies. I will try that shop in Leigh when I get a chance to get in. Where is it in relation to either Mc Donalds or 121 Music ?

webmaster - May 24, 2005 07:58 AM (GMT)
Fazakerley's is down the side street on the left after the street with BIG W... OK wollies on the corner if you are heading towards 121. You'll see Wilko's down there too.

Tried them - no good!!

Someone in the pub reckons they've seen a pic in a book sometime.

You already got it huh?

webmaster - June 16, 2005 05:02 PM (GMT)
No Manor Arms / Barrel piccies in that book unfortunately :(
Have you tried Atherton or Tyldesley libraries? I believe they have pretty good local history sections.

John - June 17, 2005 09:07 AM (GMT)
Nope - I've spoke to a guy at the Leigh archive, no joy.

Phil @ Paddy's has just bought a book with loads of local pub's in so I'll try and get a snakey peakey in that. We found a pic of ''The Carders'' though.

webmaster - June 17, 2005 09:20 AM (GMT)
Yeah, I've seen the Carders one before... is it the one where almost looks like somebody's house with a sign over the door?

John - June 17, 2005 09:42 AM (GMT)
I remember seeing The Carders, it's the building on the right of S & W's yard on the front. I think it's offices now.

webmaster - June 17, 2005 09:45 AM (GMT)
That's the one, on the corner of Printshop Lane. I never went in there. Actually it might have closed down not long after I left school.

webmaster - June 17, 2005 09:49 AM (GMT)
